One of the most common rooms that have plumbing issues in every house is the bathroom. Usually, it’s the toilet that’s causing the most problems. We understand how horrifying it can be to realize that the water refuses to go down after you’ve flushed the toilet—is it clogged? Is it about to overflow? Instead of panicking, try learning more about the problem so that you know how to tackle it.

Here’s all you need to know before you get plumbing repairs done in Methuen:

Toilet handle

Is the flush handle going down when you try to flush, but nothing happens? It’s one of the most common and easiest problems to fix. Usually, if you don’t see or hear any water movement after pressing the handle, it means that the toilet handle got disconnected.

The handle’s connected to a chain and arm that lift a flapper inside the toilet tank. Pressing the handle causes the flapper to raise and dump water into the toilet bowl. A broken chain link or loose nut might disconnect the flapper from the handle. You simply need to reconnect some basic parts to fix the problem.

Low water level

If there’s an inadequate amount of water inside the tank, the toilet won’t be able to flush. Check the back of your toilet’s tank—you should see that the water level is around an inch below the overflow tube. This problem is usually rather easy to handle—you might just need to twist the toilet’s flush valve. If the intake valve is damaged, it probably isn’t getting enough water to be able to flush.

Sometimes, there can be problems because the float ball is not adjusted properly. This causes it to sink much lower than it should, causing the tank to believe it’s full when it’s not. Pipe leaks, water pressure issues, and other serious plumbing issues can also cause the water level to decrease.

Fill valve or flapper

Is your toilet constantly running after flushing? This can be a big problem since it gets more difficult to flush it again, and it wastes a lot of water. Usually, this happens if the flapper seal is cracked or bent. You might need to replace it—this is usually a quick and easy repair.

If your fill valve is filled with hard water buildup, it can prevent it from shutting off completely. It might not be too difficult to flush out the fill valve by yourself, but it’s best to get a plumber to help you out.
